A high-trust relationship between the CEO and the board is one of the most powerful – and fragile – assets an organisation can have. When trust is strong, boards provide sharper oversight, CEOs make better decisions, and organisations move faster and with greater confidence. When it breaks down, even technically capable boards can become ineffective.
In this session, Mallory Bucher, Director of Governance Content at the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), will be joined by Martin Robinson to explore what genuinely builds trust between CEOs and boards, and what can quietly erode it. Drawing on NACD research and real-world boardroom experience, the discussion will examine the shared responsibilities of CEOs and non-executive directors in creating productive, transparent and resilient working relationships.
The session will focus in particular on the role of the non-executive director in:
- Setting the tone for open, constructive dialogue
- Balancing challenge and support without undermining trust
- Managing moments of tension, transition or performance pressure
- Building credibility and alignment from appointment through to crisis
Designed for experienced non-executive directors, this session will offer practical, grounded insights to help you strengthen your relationship with the CEO, and, by extension, the effectiveness of the board as a whole.
