Angela Terry, Founder of One Home

One Home is an education charity focused on promoting climate solutions, helping individuals cut costs, and adapting to extreme weather events.

With the need for their work higher than ever and only set to increase, One Home had identified a need to refresh their board to help them meet the challenges ahead.  They approached WB Directors’ Bespoke NED Search service, who successfully sourced a strong long list – resulting in five new appointments from our Women on Boards membership.

Angela Terry, CEO and Founder of One Home, shares her experience.

“At the time of our search, we were seeking trustees to join our board, specifically individuals with expertise in finance, sustainability, and organisation scaling. Given the massive challenge posed by climate change and the limited funding available for environmental causes, we aimed to connect with experts who had good networks to help us grow.

I have always found Women on Boards to be a valuable resource as a previous member. They’re a fantastic group of women! I chose the Bespoke NED Search service to find our next trustees because they recognise the incredible skill sets of women transitioning from full-time corporate roles to portfolio careers, which are often overlooked.

I had a host of incredible candidates to talk to about our work and see if we were a good fit. I expected to find one or two candidates, but we ended up with six new people as we had so many candidates to choose from! We gained four trustees and two ambassadors, as we wanted to keep the board manageable. It’s been a great way to make new connections; even conversations with the referees were fruitful.

Many shared a common experience of transitioning from a 9-5 job to independent work and some didn’t have the time to be on the board. Being an ambassador allows them to support us without the legal responsibilities of being a board director, so it’s a great compromise for those who are already over-committed. Those who didn’t want the ambassador role still helped us by providing valuable contacts. People recognise the positive impact we are having as an organisation, which is quite lovely.

I recommend the Bespoke Search Service to other organisations. I am particularly grateful that charities receive a discount, as it is the only way our small organisation could afford the service. Anyone managing a small charity will tell you that time is your greatest asset, and recruitment can often be a lengthy process to get to the diamonds. I am delighted that this recruitment round was one of the most efficient and effective, thanks to the support of the Bespoke NED Search service.”

Congratulations to our three members who have recently been appointed as trustees for One Home.
