Corporate culture is an ever growing strategic focus for organisations of all types. It is both financially material to a company’s success, and – increasingly – a key area of regulatory focus. Shaping culture is deeply challenging for boards: they typically have little engagement with the day-to-day experience of culture by staff; it can often be ill-defined and fail to move beyond broad ‘values’; and measurement and monitoring frameworks can be unclear or even seen as in opposition to optimising financial performance.
So how can boards influence culture effectively ‘from the top’?
We will be joined by Tina Mavraki, author of ‘A Practical Guide to Corporate Culture’, recently published by Hughes Hall Cambridge’s Centre for Climate Engagement. Focused on creating positive cultures in banks, she draws on extensive interviews with senior leaders and industry data. However, the frameworks Tina has developed constitute an invaluable toolkit for organisations of any type in taking culture beyond a theoretical problem, to become investable, actionable and measurable.
At this session, Tina will outline her ‘Corporate Supermap and Five-Step Sequence’ to creating culture change, with a particular focus on the board’s role and actions for NEDs to take.
There will also be ample opportunity for our Directors’ Circle members to share their experience and challenges under Chatham House rule for discussion and peer input. This is an essential session for all board members to develop their thinking on this key challenge.
