Ever wondered what it’s like to sit on a Building Society Board?

Want to know how ever changing regulation and legislation in Financial Services impacts Building Societies?

What skills are currently being sought by these boards and how do you find the opportunities?

Building Societies and Credit Unions together serve almost 26 million customers across the UK. They are an essential part in a diverse Financial Services sector serving savers, borrowers and the community. At this session we will hear from two experienced non-executives about how building societies differ and how that ethos translates to their governance.

They will share what appealed to them about joining a building society’s board and the challenges and rewards they have found in the role. We will also get some top tips for anyone targeting a role as a NED with a building society and what it takes to position yourself successfully.

This is a one-hour virtual event, free to our Full members. There will be opportunity for Q&A and discussion in a supportive environment.

Rachel Haworth

Rachel has served as Non-Executive Director, Chair of the Remuneration Committee and Board Risk Committee Member at Mansfield Building Society since December 2021. Additionally, Rachel was appointed as a Non Executive Member of the Independent Governance Committee at Phoenix Group in August 2022. This independent committee has FCA regulatory responsibility for oversight of the value for money provided to 3 million workplace pension customers and £61bn assets, across the Phoenix, Standard Life and Reassure brands.

Suzanne Clark

Suzanne was appointed as a Non-Executive Director and Audit Committee Chair at The Exeter in August 2023. The Exeter is an award-winning, mutual insurer providing health insurance, income protection and life insurance.

Suzanne also serves as a Non-Executive Director and Audit Committee Chair at HBL Bank and as a Non-Executive Director and Audit Committee Chair at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

This virtual event is free to Full and Directors’ Circle members. It will also include an opportunity for Q&A and sharing experience with other members of our network, under Chatham House rule.
